  2. Pam Zills says:

Hello, I am interested in buying local honey. We live in Langtown,(Moulton). Could you tell me where I can buy some? Thank you, Pam Zills :o)

  3. summerap says:

We live in Tuscumbia and I opened a hive yesterday and the bees are gone with exception of a few. I watched the bees dwindle over the last few months so I hope they were just queenless, not diseased. How can I find out? The bees are my father in law’s so I never really intended to open the hive myself. I wish I had done better.

    • lcbees says:

I’m sorry for your lost bees. Unfortunately, about 25% of bee colonies perish every year. I had one starve to death, even though they had about 3 gallons of honey in the hive. I had checked the hive 3 days before and they looked fine. Sometimes they get in a small ball to stay warm and won’t eat the honey that is one frame away. In the Spring through Fall, the hive will be full of bees. In winter, they dwindle down to 1/4th as large (so they can conserve food stores). About the end of January to early February, they begin building up. We had an early spring, so they may have built up before the flowers bloomed and they didn’t have enough food sources to support the buildup. Call if I can help.

  4. Jason Cowan says:

Hi, my name is Jason Cowan and my daughter and I’d would like to start keeping bees. We live in muscle shoals and this is probably the closest club to us. We’re not planning to start until next spring, but I think there is a lot of prep work to be done between now and then, but I really don’t know.

My daughter is interested in the Alabama beekeeper assn youth program. If we start together, will that disqualify her from participating in the program?

We’d like to attend the next meeting. Is there one scheduled? I know this is a busy time for keepers.

    Thanks,
    Jason

    • lcbees says:

Jason, Thanks for your interest in keeping bees. Our club offers New Beekeeper classes each year and helps folks get started in beekeeping. We normally meet the second Thursday of even months (Feb, Apr, Jun, Aug, Oct, Dec) at Moulton City Hall at 7:00pm. Our June meeting will be a picnic on Saturday, June 11th at a member’s farm. I’ll put you on our contact list to get the notice as we get closer.
I’m not familiar with the Youth Program. Whoever administers that program will be your best resource for participation questions. We’ll look forward to meeting you at our June meeting.
