On Saturday, February 15, 2014, a group of 13 folks met at the East Lawrence High School Shop to learn how to assembly a bee hive. Jerry Claborn and Jackie Clifton joined forces to teach four sections: box building, frame assembly, wire installation, and foundation installation.
Each section included techniques for manual assembly as well as the use of tools and fixtures. Lamar Roberson provided a demonstration of building entirely manually.
Once the instructors made a complete frame through the whole process, the students divided into groups at each station and began assembling the various parts.
To encourage new beekeeper participation, TVBA members voted in 2013 to purchase a hive kit to use in the assembly class and to give the hive away in a drawing. At the end of the class, Stephen Flannagin won the newly completed hive in a drawing. We look forward to seeing him at future meetings.
A very special thanks goes out to Mr. Defore, the shop teacher at ELHS. He donated his Saturday morning and expertise to make the participants feel comfortable. We also appreciate the assistance and support of Marcus Garner, our county extension agent.
The next meeting will follow the regular schedule of the second Thursday of every even month. We will meet at Moulton City Hall at 7:00pm on April 10, 2014 and look forward to seeing you then.
